Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – March 13, 2017 – This spring the Cal Golden Bears will be vying for a fifth consecutive championship title at the Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship. Last year was quite a success for the team, as they were also the national rugby 15s and 7s champions.
“At Cal rugby we like the pressure. We’d rather be looking over our shoulders and seeing guys chase us than us chasing others. I’d rather have this pressure, than not have any pressure quite frankly. If there’s pressure on you, you know you’re more or less at the top,” said Cal player Russell Webb, a 2016 rugby All-American for 7s and 15s. “Winning the CRCs four years in a row- of course there’s a lot of pressure, but it’s pressure that we look forward to every year and can’t wait to crack on in June.”
Over the last four years the team has had phenomenal success at the CRCs in particular.
Just this past Saturday the team took on the University of Santa Clara and had a 91-7 win. Their next match is this Wednesday, March 15, against Stanford University.
“7s is such a nice, edgy game- the teams that don’t win it, you know the last three or four teams standing, they’re certainly capable of winning it. It can be frustrating you know? There’s not much between victory and defeat,” said Cal Head Coach Jack Clark. “There’s very, very little time in the 7s games and in all the CRCs we haven’t really had any team/any champions that have just gone through unscathed. We’ve had really close games in order to win the championship and I know others have as well. So it’s just really excitement for the opportunity.”
