Cal wins 2017 Penn Mutual CRC | Collegiate Rugby Championship

In a rematch of the 2013 CRC title game, Life sought to do what no team has done since Dartmouth in the 2012 semifinal: beat Cal. In that span of now thirty wins, beginning with the 2012 third-place final, which, as coincidence would have, was a 26–7 victory over Life. Cal boasted an astonishing 42–3 record all time in the CRC ahead of the match. Only Utah in the 2010 final, Dartmouth in the 2011 quarterfinals, and Dartmouth in the 2012 semifinal have ever beaten Cal at the CRC.

For six minutes there was nothing to separate Cal and Life. In the final minute of the first half, a yellow card to Zander van Schalkwyk gave Cal the opportunity to grab the halftime lead, which the Golden Bears gladly accepted by way of Connor Sweet. The conversion sent the teams to their huddles.

Still playing with the man advantage, Cal’s Sam Cusano caught the edge of the Life defense to add a second try in the left corner. Russell Webb was unable to add the conversion. A great chase down by Anthony Salaber prevented a Life try to answer back to the Cusano score a short time before. A second try from Cusano and the Webb conversion gave the Golden Bears a three-score buffer with two minutes left. In the final minute, Life continued to look for its first points but found nothing but a wall of Cal jerseys. Cal 19, Life 0.
