Philadelphia, Penn. — June 5, 2016 — Four time consecutive winners Cal defeated UCLA in a 31-7 match this afternoon, giving the team quite a lot to think about. This year’s event was not only success for California-based rugby programs, but the Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship hit a new two-day record for overall attendance: 27,224.
Head Coach Jake Anderson
“Congratulations to both Arizona and UCLA I mean you know the semifinal and the final were against good teams and UCLA is a very special team. They can beat you just every which way. They play a lot of team ball and we have a couple guys who know how to run the length of the field and they’re a really good team. So it’s a great victory for us anytime we come out winners against them.”
Junior Jamie Howells
“It was really great. We started to get in shape in the second half. In the first half we kind of played to their game and had a hard time.”
Senior James Kondrat
“It’s just surreal. Everytime we come here it’s just surreal to be a part of such a tight group of guys. We always said throughout the weekend, ‘Our strength is team ball’ It wasn’t just speed, it wasn’t just ball handling, it was team ball- we always play team ball. So to have that come together and for us to win it’s just surreal. I can’t say it any other way. [Now post-college] I’ll probably want to go play for the New York Athletic Club.”
Junior and Captain Russell Webb
“The game is kind of a blur I’m just really proud of the boys who gave it 100%. It’s tough to play six games, especially when we narrowed it down with the weather problems. We went to bed very early, we woke up very early- it was very, very professional. I just couldn’t be happier or prouder of the boys, especially the ones leaving.”
