Lindenwood | Collegiate Rugby Championship

Players to Watch
Mickey Bateman is Lindenwood’s energizer bunny. He never quits and seems to have endless energy. He distributes well from the halfback position, but also has the ability to penetrate as a ball carrier. He’s a two-time 7s All American. Deion Mikesell has been capped by the national team in 15s, but his future may be in 7s. He was a state champion wrestler in Iowa as a high schooler, and he a rare combination of pace and power. Cristian Rodriguez, like Bateman, is small in stature, but he’s a lightning rod on the field. He is extremely quick footed and can create for others or finish on his own.

The Scoop
This is Lindenwood’s first appearance in the CRC. The Lions won their way in via a 28-team qualification tournament in Las Vegas in March, going undefeated en route to a dominant showing. The Lions should be considered alongside Cal, Life, Kutztown and St. Mary’s as legitimate contenders. They have a deep roster of talented players, several of whom are versatile and can play many positions. Like Life, the Achilles heel might be height for the Lions, as restarts and set pieces could pose a challenge against teams with good length. That said, anything short of a quarterfinal berth would be a disappointment for the debutants.
