New Mexico Highlands Standout Kevon Williams, Who Competed at Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship, Selected to USA Rugby for 2016-17 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series at Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens This Weekend

Kevon Williams, who competed for the New Mexico Highlands Men’s Rugby Sevens squad that captured the National Small College Rugby Organization National Championship at the 2016

Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship, has been selected to play on the USA Rugby Sevens squad at the 2016-2017 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series at Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens, coming up Friday, December 2nd and Saturday, December 3rd.

Williams has soared with the Denver Barbarians and the Denver Sevens high performance sides in competitive domestic tournaments since putting his name on the national team radar playing out of New Mexico Highlands University, and will get his first opportunity against top-level international competition with the USA Rugby Eagles.

Men’s Eagles Sevens Head Coach Mike Friday selected Williams and 12 other elite players to the USA Rugby Sevens squad that will open the 2016-17 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series at Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens this weekend.  The Eagles have been drawn into Pool B with Scotland, Rio bronze medalist South Africa, and Uganda for the opening leg of the 10-tournament season.

Williams was a key factor in the New Mexico Highlands Vatos squad that captured the 2016 NSCRO Sevens National Championship game against St. Mary’s at Talen Energy Stadium in suburban Philadelphia on Sunday, June 5th.  The senior and team captain ran in five tries to beat St. Mary’s College of Maryland, 31-7, leading the Vatos to their second consecutive NSCRO championship.

The selection of Kevon to the Men’s USA Rugby Sevens team makes a total of 5 former Penn Mutual CRC competitors who are set to compete in Dubai this weekend.

  • Danny Barrett – U. of California
  • Kevon Williams – New Mexico Highlands (NSCRO)
  • Don Pati – U. of Utah
  • Alec Gletzer – U. of California

The Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship returns to Philadelphia for the seventh consecutive year, Saturday, June 3rd and Sunday, June 4th, 2017 at Talen Energy Stadium.
