Penn Mutual CRC champion trains as a 2016 Olympic Games hopeful
Former female collegiate football player selected to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA
Philadelphia, Penn. — May 6, 2016 — Two-time Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship winner Amelia Bizer has been training with hopes of traveling to Brazil as a 2016 Olympian. The Pennsylvania State University athlete is currently taking the year off to focus full time on rugby, and has had quite a journey taking her to where she is today.
Growing up Bizer loved football and went on to play at the University of Saint Mary’s football team in Kansas. Although she says she was used to being the only girl on the team, she decided to focus on something she could be more competitive at and decided to focus mainly on rugby, which she had also played in high school. Known for their phenomenally successful women’s program, she decided to transfer to Penn State.
“I’m convinced she’s doing amazing things. She’s been working so hard out there…and she just keeps persevering. We’re lucky that Amelia is part of the Penn State Rugby family. We can’t wait to have her back but we’re just incredibly proud of everything that she’s done,” said Penn State’s, Head Coach, Kate Daley.
As a Nittany Lion she has played in two Collegiate Rugby Championships, currently the team has won the women’s division of the CRC’s the last three consecutive years. Although during Bizer’s junior year a USA Rugby 15s camp interfered with her participation.
“The CRC’s are one of my favorite tournaments to play in- it’s just a blast. There are just so many programs there and Rhino [rugby sportswear]’s just awesome with the kids it’s just a really fun atmosphere,” said Bizer.
After attending various USA Rugby camps and attracting consistent national attention, she signed a contract with the national team and moved out to California last June. Currently she is one of 25 girls hoping to be one of the few selected to make it to the Games. Her daily life consists of practice five days a week, with about three sessions a day: a skill session, another field session and weightlifting.
When she’s not living another day in the life of a professional athlete, Bizer spends her weekends working at a local Dick’s Sporting Goods branch. A few times she’s made it out to the local beaches but she refers to herself as more of a ‘homebody.’ She currently lives with a few other teammates off campus from the training site.
“I can’t speak enough good things about what Penn State rugby has done for me. They’ve just molded so much of who I am as a person and as a player and the support system, even when I’m out here, is amazing- they’re truly like a family to me. I’m ecstatic that I have that place to go back to in August when this is over,” said Bizer.
