Penn Mutual CRC LVI Recap & Scores – Collegiate Rugby Championship
By on

The first day of Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship qualifiers in Las Vegas produced some thrilling clashes, dominant sides and a setup for big-time clashes leading up to the championship game.

American International College had the most dominant day, thrashing Ithaca 2, Colorado State and Miami (OH) by a total score of 119-7. The only try conceded on the day was on a late penalty in their final matchup against Miami (OH).

While AIC was blitzing through pool play, Notre Dame College was quietly dominating their opponents as well. They started by beating Colorado 21-7 in the first match of the day, then beat the hometown UNLV side 43-10. The Falcons capped off their day with a 33-17 defeat of James Madison.

Lindenwood-Belleville also got off to an impressive start on opening day, beating Dixie State 29-7.  Lindenwood were equally sharp in their afternoon match, handling Ithaca 26-5.

In some of the more thrilling matches on the day, Delaware found themselves on both ends of the scoreboard. Against Colgate, the Blue Hens were knocking on the doorstep to score a try to set up a potential match-tying conversion. However, as the Delaware player dove across the line, a Colgate defender knocked the ball out, ending their scoring threat and the match.

Delaware again found themselves in a gritty battle in their afternoon contest with Air Force. The two sides traded tries early on, alternating the lead by way of a few missed and successful conversions. Air Force regained the lead with only a minute remaining.  In the closing seconds, a diving effort from Delaware forced the ball over the try line and the successful conversion awarded Delaware a hard fought victory.

One of the most surprising teams on the day was Harvard, who went 3-0 and won their pool, taking down some top-level talent along the way. The Crimson beat 2015 CRC participant St. Joe’s 32-12 in their first game, and overcame a big second-half deficit to knock off Millersville 24-21. Harvard was down as the final horn blew, but a Millersville player decided to tap and go instead of kick the ball out of bounds following a penalty. The ensuing play led to a Harvard try to win the match.

Another surprise contending team was Colgate, who upset Delaware in a close match, and beat Citadel. However, a blowout loss to Air Force knocked them out of cup contention in a tight group despite a 2-1 record.

The host team, UNLV, did not have a strong showing. They got blown out in each of their matches and only scored 17 points on the day.

Tomorrow’s Cup quarterfinal matchups should all be tight, evenly-contested showdowns. AIC will look to continue their scoring tear against Delaware, who hope to stay out of tight, down-to-the-wire finishes like they had on Thursday. The matchup of the day should be Lindenwood-Belleville against James Madison. Both teams had dominating performances on Thursday and should battle hard for a spot in the cup semifinals. Finally, Harvard will take on Utah and look to keep their surprising run going for another day as the only Ivy League representative left.

The Cup quarterfinal matches start at 9:20 AM on Friday at Star Nursery Fields adjacent to Sam Boyd Stadium.
