Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – March 7, 2017 – Madison Ohmann, a member of the team that won the 2016 Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship, is hoping to make her third appearance in the tournament this June. The 21-year-old is currently a senior at Life University where she is studying Business Administration.
Did you have any previous rugby experience before joining Life’s team?
My family was always involved because my older brother played, so I was always around rugby but never played myself.
What are your impressions about your coach?
The first coach type individual to me was Dan Payne, he was like a father figure to me because I watched him coach my brother. When coach Ros came into the program I was super excited because I could tell she had enthusiasm about the game, but also cared a lot about us developing as real people.
Do you have any highlights from your CRC experience?
The first year we were knocked out before we ever made it to the final stadium games but it was such a blast, I was just happy to be there. The second year the environment was different. Everybody felt a little more experienced and we knew we could have fun and play the game we knew. Playing in the stadium every chance we got was my favorite part about the tournament. It’s such a different atmosphere. It really makes your heart beat faster and it’s totally unlike any other feeling
Would you consider continuing playing rugby after your collegiate experience is over?
Definitely! I love the camaraderie in rugby.
How did you hear about Life’s rugby team?
My older brother was recruited out of high school to play for Life. He graduated high school three years before me so I’ve been around the campus for a while.
Anything else I should know?
Rugby is the best sport in the world (:
How does your family feel about you playing rugby?
Both my parents have always been supportive and encourage me to go to the camps, make new friends, learn a new position and grow as a person. My family comes to all of the big games, no matter how far the travel may be. My family is a huge huge support system for me.
What’s your favorite position to play in the sport?
Do you prefer 7s or 15s rugby?
7s season over everything!
Did you watch rugby went it was in the 2016 Olympic Games?
Yes! It was so exciting because I had so many friends texting me saying they were watching the games! It’s crazy because rugby has come such a long way in a such a short amount of time. Five years ago you didn’t really know anybody who knew the game that wasn’t a player or parent of a player. You’d say “I play rugby” and you’d always get the same response- “is that the game with the sticks?” Now I’ll wear a rugby shirt to Kroger and get stopped by a middle aged dad or someone’s grandpa who can’t believe he’s actually meeting a female rugby player and wants to know when the home games are.
Are there any ways you’d improve Life’s rugby program if you could?
Life’s rugby program is phenomenal. I love the coaching staff, the players, and the system we practice every day. The mentality each player carries is so positive and we’ve learned that through the program.
How do you manage your time to play rugby and be a student?
It gets really hard at times, working, playing rugby, and going to school. It’s a lot. Work is work, that’s easy, school is not my first choice of things I love doing, but rugby is my outlet. This team is my family and playing with Life gives me the opportunity to have fun but also put in hard work for myself and for those girls I play with.
I’ve learned how to juggle multiple things, I’m basically a professional multitasker now. Playing here, being held to high standards, and holding myself accountable both for those girls on the field and for the program as a whole is what keeps me on my grind. It’s made me more responsible and a better person because it’s not just about me, I have so many other people counting on me too.
