Kutztown University is an American public university located in rural Kutztown, Pennsylvania and is one of the fourteen schools that make up the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. Kutztown University was founded in 1866 as the Keystone Normal School. Over the years the school has gone by many names and in 1961 the university changed the school nickname from the Golden Avalanche to the Golden Bears. Since that time the students of Kutztown University have cheered on the Golden Bears with their heart and soul. The Kutztown University Women’s Rugby Football Club (KUWRFC) was founded in 1994 by several students at Kutztown University who were interested in playing the greatest sport in the world. The teams goal is to be competitive at the highest level of collegiate rugby, while at the same time growing the sport of rugby through our exemplary play and citizenship. The program promotes student- athletics ensuring that the academic careers of the athletes is the priority. The club has grown considerably over the last several years and continues to benefit from quality high school rugby in greater Philadelphia area. KUWRFC competes in the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Conference along with fellow CRC teams Bloomsburg University and the University of Delaware. The last several years have seen KUWRFC grow considerably both on and off the pitch. In 15’s KUWRFC is a perennial national contender with back to back Final Four appearances in 2013 and 2014. Over the last 3 years KUWRFC has begun to focus on 7’s throughout the spring semester and has seen significant improvement in quality of play and tournament results. The Golden Bears are excited to be back for their fourth consecutive year at Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship and look forward to competing against the best collegiate 7’s teams in the country.
