Founded in 1801, the University of South Carolina is the largest university in the state, serving more than 41,000 students. Recognized by the Carnegie Foundation as a top research and service institution with over 350 degree programs to choose from, to include the nation’s #1 International Business program, it is safe to say that the University of South Carolina has something to offer for everyone. The Carolina Men’s Rugby Team is a Division I men‰’s rugby program that competes within the Southeastern Collegiate Rugby Conference among some of the nation’s most established programs, recently earning back-to-back conference titles and receiving bids to both the USA Rugby National Playoffs (15‰’s & 7‰’s) and the Collegiate Rugby Championship 7‰’s Invitation on NBC. With nearly 50 years of distinguished history and a roster of 60 dedicated student athletes, fielding three sides on any given weekend, Carolina Rugby is poised to continue its success well into the future. The Gamecocks established themselves as a premier sevens program in the Southeast last spring, finishing with a record of 21-3, building upon their appearance at the Penn Mutual CRC‰’s in 2014 and their Shield Championship at the USA Rugby Nationals in 2013. With three SCRC 7‰’s series titles, South Carolina advanced to the Top-25 in all three national polls, aided by victories over Tennessee, Louisiana State, Florida, Alabama, & Virginia Tech, all of which are previous CRC participants. The Gamecocks would end the end the season with 7 All-Conference players. South Carolina has also shown a strong commitment to success inside the classroom, acknowledging seven USA Rugby Academic All-Americans in the summer of 2015, more than any other institution in the South and 5th among all institutions nationwide. Also that summer, the Gamecocks established the Carolina Rugby Scholarship program, offering the greatest financial impact of any rugby scholarship in the country. Under the guidance of Head 7‰’s Coach Steven Darnell & Head Program Coach Mark Morris, the Gamecocks look to capitalize on their recent success while making their second appearance in the Penn Mutual CRC‰’s.

Players to Watch
Christian Harrell is the team captain. He plays in the centers in fifteens, and he can play in the forwards or backs in 7s. He is one of the key decision makers on the field. Strong runner who can change gears seamlessly. Micah Stewart came from the Wondo high school program where he earned all-state honors. He has good field vision in open play and can make all the tackles. Daniel Callahan is the team’s scrumhalf. He hails from the heralded Gonzaga high school program, a perennial contender for the national championship. Great with play calling and reading the field around the breakdown.

The Scoop
The Gamecocks have played in numerous competitions this spring, sweeping both of the Southeastern Collegiate Rugby Championship tournaments to qualify for the CRC, winning Clemson 7s, finishing second to the rival Tigers at Furman’s tournament, and reaching the semifinals at James Madison’s event. This year marks South Carolina’s third CRC berth. The Cocks finished near the bottom in 2014, missed 2015 and finished 2-3 in 2016.
