The Young Bucks from Lee University
Lee University will be competing at the 2015 Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championships on May 30-31.
Philadelphia, Penn. — May 23, 2015 —Lee University Rugby is from Cleveland, Tennessee and has been around since 2002, playing mostly within their conference, with a few appearances at the regional level for 15s. This year is the second year the team has even tried to field a 7s team, and the first year to qualify for nationals.
With three graduating seniors, and only 1 junior, the Lee side is made up of almost exclusively freshman and sophomore level players, both for 15s and 7s. In 15s, only the 8-man and full back are seniors, with a junior wing and the rest of the positions fielded by underclass men. In the 7s line up, all three of the typical starting backs are seniors, with all forwards, scrum half, and substitutions as younger players.
Two years ago, the team was unranked in both 15s and 7s. This year, with a rising tide of talent, and their senior captains to guide them, they have risen to number 14, from the previous year’s rank of 27 for 15s, and have made it to the final eight teams in the nation in 7s.
The team is coming to play in the NSCRO Men’s 7s National Championship next weekend, a part of the Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship. The team is slightly off their game, missing a few faces to injury and cross cultural trips, but those who come have trained like they have never trained before, and despite their youth, are prepared to lay what experience they do have on the line, to prove they will remain a force to be reckoned with.
You may not recognize many faces, as they haven’t made a national level appearance before, and many of the players are young, but these are faces that Lee University expects to make an impact on the NSCRO scene over the next 2-3 years, and hopefully more to come.
Currently the team is trying to fundraise to help the cost of their travels to the event. To check out their progress or donate visit here.
